Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-
4814 or 682-4800 or therese.m.picado(aci.eugene.or.us
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Neighborhood Park off of Oakmont Way Open for Play
A new, 5.5-acre neighborhood park just opened near the Oakway Mall off of Oakmont
Way. Funded by the 1998 Parks and Open Space bond measure, the new park, with its wide
variety of active and leisure activities, is drawing throngs of children and adults alike.
The new playground features a sand play area and modern play equipment, including a
climbing wall, swings, spring toys, and interactive water fountain (water is turned off during the
winter). Nearby, an informal basketball court can double as a place to hold neighborhood
events, as well. Paths curve gently through the park, providing a key bicycle route and helping
to reconnect the neighborhood with new crosswalks to the Oakway Center, while a soft-surface
jogging/walking trail takes park users on a winding, quarter-mile loop through the meadows.
Surrounded by restored native oak savannah prairie, the park is an oasis of green, with more
than 150 new trees, plus large, open lawn areas and a series of rolling hills for frolic, picnicking
and sunbathing.
Justin White, who lives in the neighborhood, is very excited about the addition to the
neighborhood. "I'm so glad a park was built instead of another housing development," says
White, who recently became a father. "It was a flat field; now it has rolling hills and trees and it's
set up to play. It makes you want to run into the park and play, and I'm 30 years old!"
The park design is based on input gathered by parks staff from neighbors at a series of
public workshops held in winter and spring 2002. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for
y k next spring. For more information, call 682-4800.
###
