Eugene City Beat: New park celebrates opening day - The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, Page 1 of 2
www.registerguard.com I ©The Register-Guard, Eugene,Oregon
October 12, 2003
Eugene City Beat: New park celebrates
opening day
By Joe Mosley
The Register-Guard
Break out the confetti and the picnic basket.
Today's the grand opening for Country Lane Park, off Sorrel
Way east of Coburg Road and a block or so north of Interstate
105.
Neighbors and crews from the Eugene Public Works
Department have teamed up over the past month and a half to
renovate the park, excavating the playground area and
removing its old equipment, building a new pathway and
wheelchair ramp, and installing new play equipment.
Dozens of neighbors turned out to help pour the concrete and
install equipment.
The park now features a play structure with a rock climbing
wall, swings and hanging rings. There are also "spring riders,"
which were made possible by local fund raising and a matching
grant from the city.
"When we applied for a neighborhood grant for new spring
riders, we had no idea we would get a total remodel," says
Suzy Bock, who served as the project's volunteer coordinator.
The park, which reopened for play a week ago, will also get a
new bench, a wheelchair-accessible picnic table and a new
trash receptacle sometime during the next couple months.
Today's grand opening will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
City funds aid
in waterways study
The city will be kicking in a total of $300,000 in cash and in-
kind services for a $3.5 million, four-year study that will
identify ways to improve, restore or enhance waterways in the
Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area.
Other partners in the project are Springfield, Lane County and
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The federal agency will pay
half of the study's cost.
http://www.registerguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?name=c 1.cr.citybeat.1 0 1 2&date=2003 1 01 10/17/03
