EUGEN
,pme, _ r
Ale
September 29, 2003
CONTACT:
■ Therese Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-
4800
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Parks, Recreation and Open Space Map Now Available
The new Eugene parks, recreation and open space map is now available at all
community centers, city pools, City Hall, the Permit Information Center, the Parks and Open
Space office at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard, and on the web at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/parks.
The map has not been updated for over a decade. Since that time, the system has grown
significantly in size and diversity. There were 45 neighborhood parks in 1991; today there are
54. In 1991, the system encompassed approximately 1,800 acres; today, total acreage stands
at over 2,600 acres. The new map reflects this growth by denoting significant wetlands and
open space areas such as the West Eugene Wetlands, Eugene's largest open space system at
2,500 acres, and Ridgeline Park, Eugene's largest park at 1,000 acres. It also includes park
corridors, bike paths, running and hiking trails, special community facilities, and schools.
Using a detailed matrix, map users can access information about the full spectrum of
park and open space amenities—everything from skateboarding, dog parks, community
gardens, and tennis and basketball courts to disc golf, BMX tracks, mountain bike trails,
horseshoes, boat launches, prairies, and ponds. The flip side contains narrative about the vast
array of parks and recreation programs the city offers such as outdoor recreation, senior and
community centers, pools, metropolitan parks, volunteer opportunities, and cultural activities
and venues. A list of community resources and phone numbers is also included and some are
highlighted on the map with a blue star.
For more information, call 682-4800.
# # #
