Update on Pavement Preservation Projects
Work is proceeding smoothly on a series of pavement preservation •
projects funded by Eugene's new local gas tax. Pavement overlays have Preserving
been completed on Echo Hollow Road from Royal Avenue to Dove Lane od
and on West 18th Avenue from Bailey Hill Road to Josh Street. Paving ur
work is substantially completed on West 29th Avenue from Willamette
Street to Lorane Highway. Paving is underway and should be completed
shortly on East 30th Avenue from Hilyard to Agate streets and on Amazon Your streets
Parkway from Hilyard to 29th Avenue. In total, more than 10 lane miles of transportation
paving have been preserved by these projects. fees at work
Two projects that had been tentatively scheduled for this summer have www.ci.e u 9 ene.or.us Eu6
been rescheduled. The Public Works Department recently awarded a
construction contract to Morse Bros. for repairs to Gilham Road from Beltline to Cal Young Road and Cal Young Road
from Coburg Road to Willakenzie. Because the weather is changing and school is back in session, the department
rescheduled the work to next summer to ensure warm and dry paving conditions so the repairs will last many years. The
rescheduling also will help reduce traffic conflicts, particularly with school buses. The construction company has agreed to
honor its bid quote next summer, so no additional costs are anticipated because of the rescheduling.
Pavement preservation work on Patterson Street between 19th and 24t'' avenues has been postponed based on further
reviews of the extent of repairs needed. Studies have determined that a surface overlay would not be sufficient to
preserve the street in the long term, and that job will be rescheduled as a future street reconstruction project. In
preparation for the eventual reconstruction project, the Public Works Department this summer repaired the underground
wastewater system along this section of Patterson Street.
Affected property owners and residents have been notified of the changes in scheduling. For more information about
pavement preservation projects, call City Engineer Mark Schoening at 682-5291.
New Parks, Recreation and Open Space Map Premieres at Eugene Celebration
The new Eugene's Parks, Recreation and Open Space map will premiere at the Eugene Celebration this weekend. The
map has not been updated for over a decade. Since that time, the system has grown significantly in size and diversity.
There were 45 neighborhood parks in 1991; today there are 54. In 1991, the system
encompassed approximately 1,800 acres; today, total acreage stands at over 2,600 acres. iip-
The new map reflects this growth by denoting significant wetlands and open space areast>tcne'K ,
such as the west Eugene wetlands, Eugene's largest open space system at 2,500 acres, Rc, ;cl°e>ition Yn,;
and Ridgeline Park, Eugene's largest park at 1,000 acres. It also includes park corridors, Open_Spe•r
