EUGENE rr r
August 25, 2003
CONTACT:
• Houston Sheppard, Landscape and Medians Supervisor, 682-4825.
• Jenica Tannenholz, Public Information Support, 682-4814.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
POS STAFF RECOGNIZED FOR LANDSCAPING AT SHELDON COMMUNITY CENTER
For the second consecutive year, the Eugene Garden Club presented Parks and Open Space
staff with the "Beautification Award" for the landscaping of Sheldon Community Center. The
award, presented annually in honor of special landscape efforts to enhance Eugene, will be on
display at the center located at 2445 Willakenzie Road.
Large planter bowls, which staff salvaged from the Broadway reopening project, are the
highlight of the center's landscape beauty. A variety of more than 600 petunias, alyssum,
marigolds, zinnias, and salvia spill over the edges of the bowls and provide living artwork for
passers-by. For year-round enjoyment, pansies fill the bowls during the winter months and offer
a fresh breath of color during overcast weather.
"The community and those who work at the center love the flowers," said Joanne Glore, the
parks specialist who plants and maintains the landscapes at the center. "Almost every single
person who walks by, comments on the lovely flowers."
Staff is always looking for ways to enhance the flower displays and landscapes at the city
community centers. "Right now our plan is to further establish and expand the existing flower
beds at Sheldon," said Houston Sheppard, Landscape and Medians Supervisor. For more
information about community center landscapes, contact Houston Sheppard at 682-4825.
# # #
