POS Landscape activities
Here is some bad PR with the Assistant City Manager. We need to talk about this to see what we can do to avoid
this kind of reaction in the future. -Johnny
-----Original Message
From:CARLSON Jim R
Sent: Friday,August 22,2003 9:28 AM
To: COREY Kurt A; MEDLIN Johnny R
Cc: SVENDSEN Glen L; WALSTON Mary F
Subject: FW: POS Landscape activities
Kurt/Johnny-
This report follows on the heels of the article within the past two weeks of POS staff investing staff time to do all of
the work at Lark Park so they could save$50,000 for playground equipment. This involved POS maintenance
crews performing extensive renovation, installation of irrigation systems, turf, landscaped beds. It is nice to know
that the staff has the time and resources to do all of this extra work on behalf of the park and community centers
but disappointing to know that there is not enough time to pull the weeds at City Hall.
Jim
Original Message
From: SVENDSEN Glen L
4ir, Sent: Friday, August 22, 2003 9:15 AM
To: CARLSON Jim R
Subject:
Jim -So,how does this article in this week's Council newsletter relate to the P&OS budget reduction "in landscape bed
maintenance at Echo Hollow Pool, Sheldon Center, and Laurelwood Golf Course"? Seems like a mixed message to tell the
Budget Committee and Council that we are reducing services, and then get awards for intensely maintained
seasonal plantings. And say that there isn't money for City Hall planting bed maintenance, which is primarily perennials that
take minimal care. GlenS
POS Staff Recognized for Landscaping at Sheldon Community Center
For the second consecutive year, the Eugene Garden Club presented Parks and Open Space
staff with the "Beautification Award" for the landscaping of Sheldon Community Center. The
award, presented annually in honor of special landscape efforts to enhance Eugene, will be on
display at the center located at 2445 Willakenzie Road.
Large planter bowls, which staff salvaged from the Broadway reopening project, are the
highlight of the center's landscape beauty. A variety of more than 600 petunias, alyssum,
marigolds, zinnias, and salvia spill over the edges of the bowls and provide living artwork for
passers-by. For year-round enjoyment, pansies fill the bowls during the winter months and
offer a fresh breath of color during overcast weather.
"The community and those who work at the center love the flowers," said Joanne Glore, the
parks specialist who plants and maintains the landscapes at the center. "Almost every single
person who walks by while I'm watering comments on the lovely flowers."
9/2/03
