"Your commitment to this groundbreaking project will provide a clear
example that diesel engines, the work horse of our economy, can run more cleanly,"the governor wrote in his July 25
letter to Eugene Fleet Manager Carlos Davis. "More important, however, is how proud we are in Oregon to have people
like you willing to go beyond what is mandatory to improve the air we all breathe, and to protect the health of our citizens
and the environment for generations to come."
The Clean Diesel Fuel Consortium is made up of regional fleet providers who have partnered with the Oregon
Department of Environmental Quality and Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority to submit a grant proposal to the U.S.
Environmental Protection agency to bring ultra-low sulfur fuel into the area. The grant would pay for the difference in the
cost of regular diesel fuel vs. the ultra-low sulfur diesel. Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel is specially refined diesel fuel that has
dramatically lower sulfur content than regular diesel fuel. (Ultra-low sulfur fuel has 15 to 30 sulfur parts per million vs.
regular diesel with up to 500 sulfur parts per million.)
The use of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel dramatically reduces harmful emissions that degrade air quality and is one of a
number of a number of strategies the Fleet Services section is pursuing to conserve energy and protect the natural
environment. For more information, please contact Carlos Davis, Fleet Manager, at (541) 682-4800.
Bethel Neighborhood Park Gets New Playground, Turf and Other Amenities
Neighbors along Coraly Avenue in Bethel can now gather
at their neighborhood park and enjoy a new playground,
turf, landscaped beds, and picnic area complete with new ,
benches and a barbeque. Lark Park, located north of
Roosevelt Boulevard and west of Maple Street, was I
originally slated for a new irrigation system only funded by •
the 1998 bond measure, but, thanks to Public Works P' 1111
Parks and Open Space and Maintenance crews, a more "_ "' -
extensive renovation was undertaken in-house. A new MIMIC
-- 1.1.1t6,
irrigation system, picnic area, and fence were installed last
winter, the landscape work was performed this spring and
early this summer, the renovation of the play area was
recently completed. • -
The play area is now bigger, better and more wheelchair •
-
accessible. After a month of work, the park is sporting
several, newly refurbished amenities. The enlarged play structure now includes a spring rider, tot swing, climbing area,
and slide. Instead of sand or bark chips, park patrons will notice small, square, wood tiles surrounding the play area.
These specially engineered tiles are designed to create a layered ground covering that is hard enough to allow
wheelchairs to enter the area and maneuver over the surface, but soft enough to cushion playful feet. In addition, both
basketball backboards were reinstalled after being sandblasted and powder-coated.
"While we were working, there were always kids watching, eager to start using the new play equipment,"says Richard
Zucker, Park Amenities Supervisor. "We look forward to seeing the community benefit from this park." Two new picnic
tables should also arrive by the end of the month. For more information about Lark Park improvements, contact Richard
Zucker, Parks and Open Space, at 682-4833.
THIS WEEK
NEXT WEEK
08/11 M 5:30pm All Council Dinner Work Session McNutt Room
08/11 M 7:30pm All Council Meeting Council Chamber
08/12 T 12:15pm BT LRAPA Board Meeting LRAPA Mtg.
