Have inserted some comments below. Look for --> >
Nancy
From: ETTER John F
To: NATHANSON Nancy L
Cc: MORGAN Dick A; RHAY Tim W; WEBER John J; HAMMITT Bob; MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: Amazon Creek at Oak Patch--small scale project
Date: Thursday, April 25, 1996 9:04AM
Before making this response, I've shared your ideas with several others here. This response is therefore a
blend of the comments I got back:
Conceptually, we like the project. Staff would like to be involved on suggestions for materials, and the
locations for installing/planting them.
--> > great, thanks. That's what I was hoping for.
When you speak of "partnering" with businesses along the channel, we hope that means that they are
underwriting costs, or some of them, particularly on the maintenance end.
--> > hadn't gotten to maintenance yet- so far was hoping that we could supply 2-3 trees through
NeighborWoods program at same time they installed the picnic table(s) or benchles), which would most
likely be on THEIR property. I think I mentioned in the earlier message that I would like someone to get a
map and meet us out there so we can see the public and private property and easement lines.
Our crews mow and maintain the area at a certain level now. To the extent that placement of new
vegetation and furnishings doesn't significantly add to the current routine maintenance, there should be no
problem in adding them.
--> > good. I have consistently mentioned to the citizen volunteers as well as property owners that this is
a primary concern and reason why city staff must be involved - mentioned it to the Roosevelt group also, a
couple weeks ago.
In creating landscapes where smaller mowing machines are needed, we would ask that such be
underwritten by the sponsoring business(es). Rose bushes and other high maintenance plant materials, as
well as emptying trash receptacles, are also beyond our present capacity to care for.
--> > good advice. some may be willing to take it on, others no. Or, I may have luck with Rose Society,
since a member lives on Brittany out here.
On the public side of matching a private investment, our opportunities to assist exist most easily in with
project design and coordination--something we can accomplish by adjusting our work program for
something this small.
--> > that's just about what we need, other than a couple trees. I think this should work out fine.
For capital outlay, our opportunities lie in finding any savings in the Parks Services operating budget, which
can best be determined as we move into June (end of year). At this point, Dick Morgan (Parks
Maintenance Manager) estimates he can only match a $1,000 offering from the businesses. For $2000
dollars, one could buy a couple of the nice concrete tables (nearly indestructable) that we have started
using, and have enough left for several trees and/or shrubs. Whether we can increase the offering later
remains to be seen.
Page 1
