f l
Wash Water BMPs for Non-Profit Activities
OREGON DEQ
RECOMMENDED BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMPs)
FOR WASHING ACTIVITIES
(March 1998)
Vehicle washing by private citizens and fund-raising groups such as schools, churches, boy
scouts, girl scouts, etc. is permitted under the wash water permits (1700A and 1700B).
Fund-raising groups must limit their frequency of washing to no more than once a month
and employ the following best management practices:
Connection or drainage to sanitary sewer is the preferred disposal option and shall be
implemented with the permission of the local authority whenever possible.
Permission of the local authority to discharge into their storm sewer system shall be
obtained prior to washing.
Washing shall be limited to the exterior of vehicles(no engines, transmissions, or
undercarriages).
The use of acids, bases, metal brighteners, or hot water is prohibited. The use of
biodegradable,phosphate-free cleaners with cold water is allowed. However, cleaning
only with cold water is recommended. Chemicals, soaps, or detergents shall be used
sparingly.
Water hoses shall not be allowed to flow freely. Nozzles shall be attached to all hoses to
provide additional pressure and decrease overall usage of water.
Wash water shall either occur on unpaved areas or be directed to unpaved areas whenever
possible.
