Hammitt, Bob
From: Norris, Linda
To: Andersen, Chris; Morgan, Dick; Hammitt, Bob; Medlin, Johnny; Whitlow, Dave (RIS1);
Saxon, Ken (RIS1)
Subject: FW: Council newsletter
Date: Friday, February 11, 1994 2:06PM
This is the note that will go in the Council newsletter. Dick and Ken did a great job of explaining the issue at the
meeting last night. I am going to ask Council to put the issue of pocket parks on their list of emerging issues.
Thanks, Linda
From: Norris, Linda
To: Stewart, Vicki
Subject: Council newsletter
Date: Friday, February 11, 1994 2:03PM
West University Park - Citizens Meeting
The public meeting for input on this park was held Thursday evening, February 10. Twelve citizens attended the
meeting, along with representatives from City staff. Prior to the meeting, flyers were distributed to residents and
employees in the area inviting them to attend. Ken Saxon from Public Safety described the illegal activities
occurring in the park. The citizens described incidents they have experienced from from people in the park.
These include threatening comments, loud noise throughout the evenings, illegal drug activity, intoxication, etc.
The neighbors reported that they no longer use the park, and feel it's presence negatively affects the safety of
the area. The citizens attending the meeting were unanimously in favor of the City removing the shelter, the
lattice work and vines, and replacing the tall vegetation with plants that would improve visibility into the park.
They requested that the work be done as soon as possible, so the changes are in place before Spring. They also
asked that we cap the water fountain, and consider replacing it next summer, after we see whether these
changes had the effect of increasing legitimate use of the park. The neighbors also asked to meet again in a
year to review the success of these efforts. If illegal activity continues, they would like the City to consider selling
the land for use as housing. Our plan is to proceed with the changes suggested by the area's Neighborhood
Association, Business Association and citizens. Staff received no written comments or calls from others who
received the flyers. If you have any questions, please call Linda Norris at ext. 5524.
Page 1
