The Board has already met
with folks and passed this resolution in favor of the proposal. WUN have a general
meeting coming up this Thursday, so if there's information to share about the parks-
sponsored work shop that would be great to share at that time.
Xoxo beth
Original Message
From: NORRIS Steve D
Sent: Friday, July 29, 2005 11:17 AM
To: BRIDGES Beth B; HOSTICK Robin A
Subject: FW: WUN Board resolution regarding West University Park
FYI:
Original Message
From: healeyd@onid.orst.edu [mailto:healeyd@onid.orst.edu)
Sent: Friday, July 29, 2005 11:09 AM
To: KELLY David S; PIERCY Kitty
Cc: Goldman, Don; Gross, Kellyn; Steve Jarvis; Laupheimer, Craig; NORRIS Steve D; Drix
(SMTP) ; Valle, Marie; Wallace, David; Walsh, Adam
Subject: WUN Board resolution regarding West University Park
Dear Mayor Piercy and Councilor Kelly,
The Board of the West University neighborhood association, West University Neighbors, met
last night (July 28, 2005) with community residents, EPD Officer Randy Ellis, University
Small Business Association representative Sheila Daughtry Abbott, Eugene Parks Department
representative Robin Hostick, property owner Bob Quinney, and developer Gordon Anslow to
discuss the West University Park on East 14th between Patterson and Hilyard. As you know,
the park has been closed for about 10 years. The neighborhood association has held several
meetings to discuss how to have a viable park in our neighborhood. After hearing Officer
Ellis's detailed description of the issues with pocket parks and Sheila Abbott's concerns
as a 13th Street business representative, we heard a proposal from Mr. Anslow. He
described a land swap where the Quinneys, who own the property at the corner of 14th and
Hilyard, would exchange their corner lot for land at the back of the current park. The
current West University Park would lose depth but extend to Hilyard Street: 200 feet on
14th Street and 65 feet on Hilyard Street (approximately 13,240 sq.ft.) rather than its
current 16, 150 sq.ft. They plan to build a two- to three-story apartment complex with
upper balconies and windows looking down on the park. Officer Ellis expressed cautious
support for this idea, which would provide more "eyes on the park, " thus greater
likelihood for success.
After discussion, the West University Board unanimously approved the following statement,
to be delivered to City Council:
1
