MEMO
To: Chris Andersen, Dave Whitlow
From: Bob Hammitt
Date: September 20, 1995
Subject: West University Park
Attached is a letter from Richard Greene advocating that we close West University Park because
of the drug dealing and criminal activity that is occurring there. As you probably recall, this is
the one that we removed the shelter and the other amenities from last year in an effort to curtail
the illegal activity. We could certainly declare the park closed and fence it. We could also
declare it surplus and sell it to allow some development to occur on the property. If we sold it,
we would want to recommend to the Council that the funds be used to purchase more desirable
park land.
Shanon McCarthy of the West University Neighborhood Association contacted Dick Morgan
with her concerns. Shanon's concerns are much the same as Richard's with the addition of
people sleeping in neighbor's yards and vacant lots in the area. She will be contacting other
neighborhood council members with the intent to support closure of the park. The next
neighborhood meeting is scheduled for October 5th, with the park on the agenda for discussion.
Parks staff took out a small pickup load of garbage on Monday, however, staff is not real
comfortable even going into the park anymore.
We could make this part of our discussion at Executive Managers on October 5th if you desire.
If we do anything sooner, the three of us should put our heads together before the end of the
week as Chris and I are both out of town all next week. Let me know if you have any
suggestions.
