Celebrating Wetlands: Groups plan May celebration of Eugene's unique wetlands - The Rt... Page 1 of 7
www.registerguard.com 1 ®The Register-Guard, Eugene,Oregon
May 1, 2003
Celebrating Wetlands: Groups plan May
celebration of Eugene's unique wetlands
By Mike Stahlberg
The Register-Guard
What do April showers cause to sprout up in May?
Why, National Wetlands Month, of course.
Until now, Wetlands Month has been largely ignored by winter-
weary Oregonians.
This year, however, a consortium of public agencies and
private nonprofit groups hopes to use National Wetlands Month
to increase public awareness and appreciation of the west
Eugene wetlands.
The call to "Celebrate Eugene's Unique Wetlands" is being
issued by the Willamette Resources Education Network.
e.
"Overlook" is a panoramic photograph entered in the wetlands photography exhibit
by Len and Terry Stolfo.
Events on WREN's Wetlands Month calendar range from an
exhibit of wetlands photographs to interpretive hikes focusing
on birds, bats, butterflies, insects or wildflowers that live in the
wetlands. Also planned are a series of free Wednesday night
nature talks and numerous tours for school groups.
The west Eugene wetlands include about 2,500 acres of land in
the Amazon and Willow Creek drainages on both sides of West
11th Avenue. The property was acquired over the past 10
years by a partnership that includes the city of Eugene, the
U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Nature Conservancy,
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service.
Now the partnership is ready to enter a new phase, said Scott
http://www.regi sterguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?nam a=e6.od.wetl and s.05 01&date=2003 05... 5/5/03
