Eugene City Beat: City enforcing vegetation regulations -The Register-Guard, Eugene, 0i.. Page 2 of 2
Pre's Trail gets a spring look
L., Maybe it's just time for a little spring cleaning throughout the
city.
Even a half-mile Pre's Trail in Alton Baker Park is being spruced
up, from the southwest corner of the park's pond to the
footbridge southwest of the BMX track.
The upgrade is a joint project of the city's Natural Resources
Maintenance Crew and the Oregon Track Club Masters, with
the park crew putting down a gravel base to reinforce the
running and walking trail. The track club is taking things from
there, spreading a cushion of bark mulch atop the gravel.
In addition to serving recreational foot traffic, the trail also
provides access for parks employees working on projects in the
largely undeveloped eastern portion of the park - from mowing
hazardous vegetation to removing storm debris or invasive
plants.
The gravel base is expected to help the trail hold up better
against the occasional traffic by maintenance equipment.
Library gets 15 minutes of fame
The word's gotten out.
Eugene's spectacular new downtown library has made the
feature of American Libraries, the magazine of the American
Library Association. So it's a little like a politician making the
cover of Time, or an athlete greeting readers of Sports
Illustrated.
In their overview of Eugene's new civic centerpiece, the
magazine's editors describe it as "a model of sustainable
design that also serves up a breathtaking sky-lit circular
staircase, grand reading spaces and a welcoming entry
garden."
Guess where you can find a copy of the magazine.
Yep. Head for the Magazines and Newspapers area of the
downtown library.
Joe Mosley can be reached at 338-2384 or jmosley@
guardnet.corn.
0
http://www.registerguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?name=d 1.cr.citybeat.0504&date=20030504 5/6/03
