LED Traffic Signal Conversion Pays Off
Last fall, the City entered into an energy-saving agreement with EWEB to change Eugene's incandescent green traffic
signal indicators to LEDs (light emitting diodes). The changeover has been completed slightly ahead of schedule, and
-WEB has forwarded a check for $194,843, the incentive offered as part of the agreement.
More than 1,500 indicators were changed at all of the City's 223 traffic signals. Each green LED uses more than 100 watts
less in electrical power than an incandescent signal bulb. Several years ago, before green LEDs were cost-effective, the
City changed all the red traffic signal indications to LEDs. For more information, contact Tom Larsen, co-AIC
Transportation Division Director, at 682-8450.
First Annual American-Russian Youth Art Awards
The Eugene-Irkutsk Sister City Committee and Maude Kerns Art Center are pleased to invite you to The First Annual
American-Russian Youth Art Awards Ceremony on Saturday, March 15, 2:00 -4:00 p.m. at the Art Center, 1910 E. 15th
Avenue, Eugene. Mayor Torrey will present the awards at 2:30 p.m.
Out of sixty entries from teenagers throughout Eugene, a jury selected twelve winners. All students will be recognized for
their participation, and special recognition will be given to the twelve young artists. Russian tea and desserts will be
served. Also, there will be an exhibit of samovars, the traditional Russian teapot, a centuries-old design in the homes of
rich or poor.
In Irkutsk, the twelve winning entries have been chosen and will be shipped to Eugene. The Irkutsk Committee and
Maude Kerns are already discussing plans for next year's youth art entries. Admission is free and parking is available at
the center. For more information, please call 345-1571 or check the Irkutsk website: www.http://eugene-irkutsk.orq.
