Eugene City Beat: Work crews in area parks clear out ivy - The Register-Guard, Eugene, (..: Page 2 of 2
under the federal Clean Water Act.
More than 3,000 cuttings of black cottonwood, red osier
dogwood and two species of native willow were planted along
the edge of the creek under the direction of the Eugene Parks
Division's wetlands and open waterways section.
About 300 Oregon ash trees were planted along floodplain
benches that were created when parts of the creek were
widened in 1995, and 21 Willamette Valley ponderosa pines
were planted at the top of the bank near two overlooks on the
Amazon Creek bike path.
Another 160 Oregon ash trees were planted along a section of
Amazon Park near the Adidas Trail.
Fern Ridge bike path
You still can't get quite to Fern Ridge Reservoir on the bike
path of the same name, but you can now get 2 1/2 miles
closer.
An extension of the Fern Ridge Bike Path around Meadowlark
Prairie and along a dike on the prairie's edge has been
declared "substantially complete" by city officials, and is open
to the public as a few final touches are made.
The new segment of 12-foot-wide, concrete path extends from
Terry Street in the Bethel area to Greenhill Road at Royal
Avenue.
The path crosses four bridges and includes connecting spurs
east to Roosevelt Boulevard and to a new overlook and wildlife
observatory along Greenhill Road south of Royal Avenue.
Amenities include 10 cast bronze disks along the path with
portrayals of native plants and birds.
City crews announced the "soft opening" last week after
completion of all safety features along the path, including
bridge railings and signs where the path crosses railroad tracks
near Terry Street.
Installation of benches, interpretive signs, covered picnic
tables and a web camera is to be completed this spring.
Joe Mosley can be reached at 338-2384 or jmosley@
guardnet.com.
CITY BEAT/EUGENE
0
http://www.registerguard.com/cgi-bin/printStory.py?name=c 1.cr.citybeat.0209&date=200302,...1 2/11/03
