Parks Crews, Volunteers Prepare for Gardening Season at Community Gardens
Parks crews and volunteers from the community are busy
-eparing Eugene's five community gardens for the 1111
?coming gardening season. Work, such as mowing the I
garden pathways and clearing the fence lines of grass,
weeds and blackberries, was initiated because of the ;
feedback received from a meeting the Parks and Open
Space Division held with participants in the community
gardens program last October. Other maintenance work
currently underway includes mowing the garden pathways a`"`-
and abandoned plots and removing debris and garbage. 'o'
More than four loads of trash were hauled from Mathews
Gardens alone. Plans are also in place to increase the
mowing during the spring and summer months and to better
contain invasive blackberries in the gardens. Cleanup at Matthews Gardens
The Community Gardens program has been offering Eugene residents the opportunity to cultivate their own garden since
1978. The Parks and Open Space Division assumed management of the Community Gardens program from the River
House Outdoor Program in July. There are five community gardens throughout Eugene with a total of 250 plots:
• Amazon at 27th and High,
• Mathews at 15th and Hayes,
• Whiteaker at the end of North Polk,
• River House at 301 North Adams, and
• Alton Baker at the east end of the Alton Baker Park parking lot.
C whole or half plot can be rented. Rent is$52 per year for a full plot and $42 per year for a half-plot. Registration begins
onday, March 17, at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard in Eugene. A truck for debris will be available for garden clean-up on
the dates below:
• March 22, 9-11:30 a.m. at Whiteaker Garden
• March 22, 1-3:30 p.m. at Mathews
• March 29, 9-11:30 a.m. at Amazon
• March 29, 1-3:30 p.m. at Alton Baker
A site will be designated for debris at River House, the smallest community garden site. For more information, call
Program Manager Chris Girard at 682-4845.
Community Block Grant Funds Used to Build Access Ramps
A $53,000 Community Development Block Grant will enable
the Public Works Maintenance Division to construct sidewalk
access ramps at 37 intersections throughout the city. The
Maintenance Division has received these grants for the past t '.
several years as part of an ongoing, citywide effort to
increase accessibility in the community. The access ramps,
meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, `
which =
feature truncated domes made of either brick or fiberglass
and are being constructed at locations determined by the ►. '"!`
Disabilities Committee of the Human Rights Commission and
from citizen requests. Construction began February 10 at
P -
two locations on Tyler Street. Upon completion of these ..
imps, the sidewalk corridor between 18th and 28th avenues
will be accessible to persons with disabilities.
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 5
cc021303.wpd
February 14,20003
