EUGENE
e oef
January 2, 2003
CONTACT:
• Wayne Masoner, construction project manager, 682-4883;
• John Weber, parks planner, 682-4908 or
• Therese Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, at 682-4814 or
682-4800
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BETTER PARKING AND ACCESS TO PREFONTAINE MEMORIAL WITHIN THE MONTH
Soon residents will be able to more easily park and visit the memorial of champion
runner, Steve Prefontaine, located along Skyline Boulevard at the site of the tragic car accident
that took the runner's life in 1975. From January 6 at 7 a.m. to January 10 at 5 p.m., the portion
of Skyline Boulevard near the intersection of Birch Lane will be closed so that the road can be
widened to accommodate a few more parking spaces and safer access to the memorial.
The City's Parks and Open Space Division acquired the memorial through a private
donation over a year ago. One of the stipulations of the donation was to improve access to the
memorial by creating parking. Eugene Sand and Gravel, under a City contract, will widen the
road approximately 170 feet. During construction, this portion of Skyline Boulevard will be
closed and there will no access to Birch Lane from Skyline.
For more information about the construction, call 682-4883. For more information about
the park project, call 682-4908. For more information about Prefontaine, visit
www.prefontainerun.com/.
# ##
