Under the auspices of the American Cancer Society and the United States
Conference of Mayors, this initiative is designed to heighten awareness about breast cancer and encourage women of all
ages to obtain information about screening and mammography and to seek appropriate medical services.
his year alone, an estimated 203,500 new cases of female breast cancer and 1,500 new cases of male breast cancer will
be diagnosed. Public Works Engineering designed the project to realign and add meanders to
the existing channeled stream through the westernmost portion of Tugman Park near 36th Avenue and Hilyard Street. This
will lengthen the stream, reduce flooding and extend seasonal use of the open play field in the park. Stream banks will be
stabilized with native vegetation to improve water quality and natural habitat in the stream corridor. New sidewalks will be
constructed to further enhance this area of the park.
Park neighbors and other interested parties have been activ•aly involved in the design of the project. Additionally, once
construction is completed, there will be opportunities for volunteers to plant vegetation and make other interesting
enhancements along the stream. Stormwater user fees will fund the $295,000 project, which is scheduled to be
completed in early November. Wildish Construction is the general contractor on the job. For more information, call City
Engineer Mark Schoening at 682-5241 or Project Manager Terry Colvin at 682-5398.
Summer Projects Enhance Amazon Creek
';onsiderable work took place along Amazon Creek this summer as part of the intensive summer field season of the Parks
and Open Space Division Open Waterways program.
