The annual program, which has been available
to Eugene citizens since the late 1960s, offers residents leaf pick-up and delivery services.
The program was originally implemented to prevent street flooding caused by the clogging '
of gutters, catch basins, and storm drain lines. "Over the years, the program has expanded
as it has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community," says program ///
coordinator and parks maintenance crew supervisor Richard Zucker. The program now
collects and recycles leaves by delivering them to residents, the City's community gardens,
community groups such as Food for Lane County, and commercial recyclers who use them
s mulch or compost. Nearly 4,000 tons of leaves are recycled every year.
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
October 25,2002 cc102402.wpd
