The Sportsfields crew laid durable mats, made of recycled tires, in front of
the tees, and nothing but positive feedback keeps rolling in.
"We decided to test try one hole first," says parks maintenance worker Dennis
Rattenborg. "When players kept thanking us for it, we did the rest."
In disc golf, players tee off from a concrete pad into grass as they gain momentum and
launch the disc. Over the years as the popularity of the sport has increased, the grass beyond
the concrete pad has become compacted, and the area turns into a mud hole when it rains or
the sprinklers are used. When the Sportsfields crew recently had some heavy mat leftover from
another project, they saw an opportunity to finally address this persistent problem. They
reinforced the affected area by laying crushed rock and then covered the rock with the thick,
heavy mat, secured in place by long, metal spikes.
The solution was particularly gratifying as no additional cost was incurred and it seems
to have been met with unanimous approval. "We have received incredibly positive feedback
from people who use the course," says Rattenborg.
For more information about the project, call 682-4826.
