_______newe _ _
. +Mk ..WIR
(,104,11EuGEyl P
..,
September 4, 2002
CONTACT: Neil Bjorklund, Senior Planner, 682-5507
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PROTECTING WILD SALMON IS FOCUS OF SEPTEMBER 10 WORKSHOP IN EUGENE
A public workshop on strategies to protect wild salmon in the Eugene area will be held
Tuesday, September 10, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell Senior Center, 155 High Street.
Salmon are an indicator species, and the decline and subsequent listing of wild chinook
salmon as an endangered species in the upper Willamette River is an indication that the local
watershed is in poor health. The workshop is being held by the City of Eugene to provide
information about salmon and their local habitat and to collect public comment on a set of 10
draft proposed strategies for salmon protection and recovery.
The proposed strategies include establishing a "salmon protection zone" along the river
to protect riparian vegetation, which provides shade to keep water cool for salmon and filters
out stormwater pollutants before they reach the river. The proposed salmon protection zone
would include a 75-foot development setback and a 45-foot transition zone.
While some of the strategies are property specific, others recognize the general
importance of reducing stormwater pollution and improving habitat. For example, one of the
proposed strategies is to adopt a list of invasive, non-native plants for the Eugene area and
prohibit use of any of the listed plants in any new landscaping approved by the City.
In addition to providing opportunities for public comment, the workshop will feature
videos, hourly presentations, and displays. For more information about the workshop or salmon
protection and recovery strategies, visit the web at www.ci.eugene.or.us/salmon.
###
New
Public Works*Administration•City of Eugene•858 Pearl Street•Eugene,OR 97401
Phone:(541)682-5262•FAX:(541)682-8826• www.ci.eugene,or.us
