The public is invited to join Kalapuya elder Esther Stutzman
and other tribal members, the park's citizen planning committee members, and City officials at 10 a.m. at Eastgate
Woodlands, the Springfield entrance to Alton Baker Park, south of the intersection of"D" and Aspen streets on the north
bank of the Willamette River.
The eastern section of Alton Baker Park, which comprises 237 acres and is dedicated for passive recreation and habitat
restoration, was renamed to recognize the Kalapuya people who hunted, fished and gathered camas bulbs on this land
and demonstrated their reverence and stewardship of the land. The renaming was initiated by the park's citizen planning
committee in collaboration with the Komemma Cultural Protection Association of the Kalapuya Tribe. Whilamut
(pronounced "wheel-a-moot") is a Kalapuya word that means"where the river ripples and runs fast."
Whilamut Natural Area provides a link to Springfield via riverside bike paths and open space. The area has also been
the site of extensive habitat restoration efforts. Countless volunteer hours have been invested in the park removing
invasive vegetation, planting native plants, educating the public, and managing the park so that it remains a dedicated
natural area. The project is part of United
Way's annual Day of Caring campaign in which volunteers participate in community enhancement projects all over the
city. The park is located at the end of Edison Street off Bethel Drive.
"le bridge and path will create a new entry to the park from the north, near the park's sportsfield. It also enhances the
...partnership between the City of Eugene and Red Cross in providing community support services for the neighborhood.
In addition to the United Way, City of Eugene, and Red Cross, several other community businesses are contributing to
make this ambitious project a reality. OBEC Engineering is donating the design and construction labor. Ken Marquardt
Construction granted an easement to allow the path to travel through private property. Rexius is donating wood chips for
the path. Triton Group and Eugene Sand and Gravel are also donating materials.
Considerable preparatory work will be done before the bridge is built and the path laid, including the removal of a fence,
grading of the terrain and laying of the concrete footings.
