(&18-z$ <br /> Eugene Fire & Emergency Medical Services Department <br /> 1705 West 2nd Avenue <br /> Eugene,Oregon 97402 <br /> NEWS RELEASE <br /> September 27,2002 <br /> For further information,contact: <br /> Glen Potter,Fire&EMS Department,682-7118 <br /> FIRE DEPARTMENT TO CONDUCT <br /> TWO TRAINING BURNS <br /> The Eugene Fire & EMS Department has scheduled the following two training burns: <br /> Friday, September 27, 9:30 a.m., 1690 Coburg Road -- This is a donated house that will be <br /> burned in an exercise designed for chief officers to reinforce and apply classroom training that <br /> they have been receiving this week. <br /> Monday, September 30, 9:30 a.m., Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park-- This will <br /> be a four-acre controlled burn in the area over the old landfill on the southcast side in the eastern <br /> section of the park. The burn will give firefighters practice in wildland firefighting techniques <br /> including building fire lines and creating defendable spaces and safety zones with fire. This burn <br /> will also provide certain ecological benefits in the park as it will help the City to manage <br /> invasive plant species. Following the burn, the area will be replanted with native grass seed to <br /> encourage a more diverse plant community.
