EUGENE <br /> EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER \ <br /> ,lay 23, 2002 <br /> City of Eugene <br /> 777 Pearl Street, Room 105 <br /> Eugene,Oregon 97401-2793 <br /> (541)682-5010 <br /> (541)682-5414 FAX <br /> www.ci.eugene.or.us <br /> IN THIS WEEK'S EDITION <br /> CITY RECEIVES GRANT FROM OREGON WATERSHED ENHANCEMENT BOARD FOR WETLAND ACQUISITION <br /> AROUND THE CITY <br /> City Receives Grant from Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board for Wetland Acquisition <br /> On May 17, the City of Eugene, on behalf of the West Eugene Wetlands Partnership, received a$500,000 grant from the <br /> Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB)to purchase wetlands in west Eugene. <br /> This funding, coupled with funds received from the Eugene District Bureau of Land Management, City of Eugene, and a <br /> federal grant from the North American Wetlands Migratory Bird Commission,will enable the partnership to purchase <br /> approximately 75 acres of wetlands in the floodplain of Amazon Creek. The prairie wetlands will be jointly managed by the <br /> agencies in the partnership: the City of Eugene, Bureau of Land Management, Army Corps of Engineers, The Nature <br /> Conservancy, Oregon Youth Conservation Corps, and Lane Council of Governments. The area may be restored in the <br /> LIture through the wetland mitigation bank or other funding sources. <br /> The land purchased with this OWEB grant will add to the 2,500 acres of publicly owned land the wetlands partnership has <br /> already acquired and will provide open space recreational and educational opportunities as well as benefits to wildlife and <br /> water quality. The West Eugene Wetlands Program has one of the most successful track records of any similar program <br /> in the region and is considered a national model for innovative and collaborative wetlands management. <br /> This grant is the second received by the City on behalf of the wetlands partnership. In January 2001,the first grant for <br /> $900,000 was approved for the acquisition of land near 18`h and Bertelsen as well as 242 acres along Coyote Creek,which <br /> was purchased by The Nature Conservancy.
