In the fall, volunteers will plant native
L ecies in their place. Neighbors have been collaborating with Hendricks
ark staff, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and the Native Plant
Society to identify plants that enhance the neighborhood and require low r *%1
ongoing maintenance.
The work along Laurel Hill Drive is the first of three components of the
"Neighborhood Beautification Project". The other two components are
repairing the neighborhood reader board and planting perennials in the `
surrounding right-of-way and replanting the planter boxes at Laurel Hill
Park.
The project received a little over$1,100 from the City of Eugene's Neighborhood Matching Grants program. Neighborhood
and student volunteers have pledged almost 200 hours to work on the three beautification projects. Business supporters
include Rexius Forest Products, Gray's Garden Center, and PC Market of Choice(Franklin Boulevard). In early May, a crew removed the
playground's old sand surface and installed two"lifts,"or layers, of a rubberized compound made from recycled tires.
Vince the compound dried, it formed a very resilient, long-lasting, easy-to-maintain surface.
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
May 16,2002 cc020516.wpd
