a
•
PICADO Therese M
From: PICADO Therese M
cent:
Thursday, May 02, 2002 9:29 AM
o: JONES Eric R; MEDLIN Johnny R
Subject: RE: 2 articles for Council newsletter
Changes have been incorporated into your copy, Eric. I talked to Kate Rowles and she'd like to include a copy
of the newsletter in the council packets so I'll 3-hole punch them and add them to my other council pack items
(and deliver before noon).
The native plant garden release is out! Packets will be distributed sometime this morning and I'll follow-up with
print media as per our conversation, Eric.
Thanks,
—Original Message
From: JONES Eric R
Sent: Thursday,May 02,2002 8:16 AM
To: MEDLIN Johnny R
Cc: PICADO Therese M
Subject: 2 articles for Council newsletter
Here are the two POS articles for this week's Council newsletter. For the article on the POS newsletter, I'm
recommending we use the new POS image because a picture of the front page of the newsletter would be difficult to
see given the size of photos in the Council newsletter. As noted in the CC newsletter article, I have copies of the POS
newsletter and will place them in the Council office. If you could return comments to me by 9:30 a.m. today, very
much appreciated.
New Native Plant Garden Unveiled Saturday at Hendricks Park
The new Hendricks Park Native Plant Garden will be dedicated at a ceremony on Saturday, May 4. The
event, sponsored by the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division, will take place at 1 p.m. at the F.
M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 Summit Avenue. Featured speakers include Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey, City
Councilor David Kelly, noted Los Angeles landscape architect Jin Chen, who designed the native plant
garden, Jerry Blakely, who helped organize community support for the garden, and representatives from
the newly formed Friends of Hendricks Park. All City Council members are invited to attend.
Creating a native plant garden was one of the top action priorities that emerged from the Hendricks Park
Forest Management Plan, adopted by the Council in January 2000. Developed with the help of ecosystem
experts and local citizens, the plan outlines a long-term vision for Hendricks Park, including a garden that
showcases the variety and horticultural uses of plants native to the Willamette Valley.
This vision is becoming a reality through a partnership between the City of Eugene and private citizens.
Last year, Jerry Blakely decided to help fund a native plant garden as a living memorial to his wife who
was dying of cancer. A fund was established with the Oregon Community Foundation, enabling the
community to match City funds, and work has begun on the garden.
"Through this project we hope to increase public support and interest in Hendricks Park and demonstrate
what can be accomplished in a community through public/private partnership," says Blakely.
For more information about the native plant garden, call Parks and Open Space public information
specialist Therese Picado at 682-4814 or Jerry Blakely at 343-3728.
Parks and Open Space Newsletter Debuts in Local Homes early next Week
A new publication about Eugene's parks and open space will begin arriving at local homes early next
gip, week. Titled "Eugene Outdoors," the eight-page newsletter is being mailed to all Eugene residents by the
Public Works Parks and Open Space Division.
i
