The cover article features Hendricks Park. Other articles
provide information on park planning and construction projects, give a tour of the west Eugene Parks
r 7 windstorm tell about volunteer
wetlands, offer tips on tree safety in the wake of the February ,
and educational opportunities in the community, and much more. The event, sponsored
by the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division, will take place at 1 p.m. at the F. M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200
Summit Avenue. Featured speakers include Eugene Mayor Jim Torrey, City Councilor David Kelly, noted Los Angeles
landscape architect Jin Chen, who designed the native plant garden, Jerry Blakely, who helped organize community
support for the garden, and representatives from the newly formed Friends of Hendricks Park. All council members are
invited to attend.
reating a native plant garden was one of the top action priorities that emerged from the Hendricks Park Forest
Management Plan, adopted by the council in January 2000. Developed with the help of ecosystem experts and local
citizens, the plan outlines a long-term vision for Hendricks Park, including a garden that showcases the variety and
horticultural uses of plants native to the Willamette Valley.
This vision is becoming a reality through a partnership between the City of Eugene and private citizens. Last year, Jerry
Blakely decided to help fund a native plant garden as a living memorial to his wife who was dying of cancer. A fund was
established with the Oregon Community Foundation, enabling the community to match City funds, and work has begun on
the garden. "Through this project we hope to increase public support and interest in Hendricks Park and demonstrate
what can be accomplished in a community through public/private partnership,"says Blakely.
For more information about the native plant garden, call Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist Therese
Picado at 682-4814 or Jerry Blakely at 343-3728.
Metro Television to Change Channel Locations in Some Areas
Effective May 29, 2002,AT&T Broadband will begin making changes to its channel line-up.
