ront 118W
if:41
EPGEtiE _
c
May 31, 2002
CONTACT:
• Lorna Baldwin, coordinator, Eugene Stream Team, 682-4850 (office), 913-1292 (cell
phone for the day of event only and not for release)
• Therese M. Picado, public information specialist, Eugene Parks and Open Space, 682-
4814
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EUGENE STREAM TEAM AND LOCAL RADIO STATIONS HOST
11TH ANNUAL AMAZON APPRECIATION DAY
Eugene Stream Team, KZEL 96.1, KNRQ 97.9, and KUGN 590 invite the Eugene
community to help clean up Amazon Creek this Saturday, June 1, at the 11th Annual Amazon
Appreciation Day. The kick-off begins at 9 a.m. at Patterson Elementary School, 1510 W. 15th
Avenue in Eugene. Volunteers will receive work instructions, directions to sites, equipment, and
snacks. At 10 a.m., work will begin at several sites along the creek, including Jiffy Mart on East
Amazon, 33rd and East Amazon, the running trail at 24th and Hilyard, Oakpatch Road and
r Amazon Creek, and Patterson Elementary. Volunteers will reconvene at Patterson School at
12:15 p.m. for lunch, which is provided by event sponsors.
Amazon Appreciation Day began in the early 1990s when there were no formal
resources or efforts dedicated to the clean up of the creek. In 1994, Eugene Stream Team
became involved and began recruiting neighborhood groups, service organizations, businesses,
and agencies to adopt segments of the creek and initiate specific clean up and restoration
projects. In recent years, 100 to 200 people have participated in the event, depending on the
weather.
"Work is love made visible," says Stream Team Coordinator Lorna Baldwin. "Every year
people come out to show appreciation for the creek at this event." Baldwin also adds that
groups, such as Southeast, Jefferson-Westside and Farwest neighbors, Satre Associates,
Eugene Metro Rotary, and Lane Council of Governments, sponsor projects at the creek
throughout the year.
For more information about Amazon Appreciation Day and other Stream Team projects,
call 682-4850 or e-mail lorna.j.baldwin@ci.eugene.or.us.
