that need to be made in the new code, the old code is in effect. Call the Urban Forester's office
tie at 682-4800 with any questions.
City Tree Canopy Cover Changes. Last October,we received the final copy of a study we
participated in that used American Forests' CITYgreen software to analyze aerial photos and
satellite imagery from 1972 and 2001 to detail how the forest canopy cover in the Willamette
Valley has changed over the last several decades. The software, which we used in a pilot project
during the code revision process a few years ago, also calculates, in dollar figures, the benefits
that tree canopy provides, such as air pollution reduction, carbon sequestration, and water quality
improvement.
Our partners in the"Regional Ecosystem Analysis for the Willamette/Lower Columbia Region
of Northwestern Oregon and Southwestern Washington State"included the USFS, ODF,
Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and the cities of Albany, Beaverton,
Corvallis, Portland, Salem, Tualitin, Vancouver and Wilsonville. Major findings show that
average tree cover in the Willamette Valley has decreased from 46% in 1972 to 24%in 2001.
Contact me by phone or by e-mail [mark.r.snyderci.eugene.or.us] to receive a copy of the final
report. In the meantime, you can look at this news, once again, as an opportunity to talk with
your customers about all the good reasons to plant trees and take care of them properly for the
best environmental benefits, benefits that can translate directly into dollars in their pockets!
(100
Coy
