EUGENE
newb're!eabe.
April 4, 2002
CONTACT:
• Troy Kreger, NeighborWoods, City of Eugene, 682-4831
• Mark Snyder, Urban Forestry, City of Eugene, 682-4819 or
mark.r.snyder c©ci.eugene.or.us
• Therese Picado, Public Information Specialist, City of Eugene, 682-4814
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HONOR TREES AT EUGENE'S ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
Mayor Jim Torrey, cub scouts from Den 5, Pack 357, and students from the
environmental education class of the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls Club will honor the
community's commitment to trees by planting trees at Westmoreland Park Saturday, April 6, at
9 a.m. The event will include remarks by Mayor Torrey and be followed by a work party to plant
a dozen or more trees in the park and reinforce the fencing and staking on last year's
community planting of 100 trees at the site. Interested community members should meet at
Westmoreland Park near the Fillmore Street parking lot.
The event commemorates Arbor Day, a national tree holiday. Established in 1872, the
day was set aside to plant ceremonial trees, educate children about the importance of trees and
honor the important role trees play in our communities. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day.
In Oregon, the first full week in April has been designated as Arbor Week.
"By planting additional trees in Westmoreland Park and caring for last year's plantings,
we are showing our commitment to effective, ongoing community forestry programs," says Mark
Snyder, City of Eugene Urban Forester.
For more information, call 682-4831.
###
L
