He often
duplicates natural stone outcrops of the high mountains, a style known as the "Czech crevice
garden."
Halda has also traveled all over the world collecting seeds to create hybrids and
diversify and preserve plants such as primrose, gentian and daphne. His new book, "The
Genus Daphne," is about his work with daphne. Halda will speak about this subject in Eugene
at the Rhododendron Society monthly meeting, Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the Campbell
Senior Center, 155 High Street.
Awarded the Marcel Le Piniec award for lifetime achievements from the North American
Rock Garden Society for his pioneer work developing seed for rock gardens, Halda says, "You
have to see the countries where we collect, where real nature disappears very fast and you
have to protect what's left."
Photos of the first phase of the Hendricks Park rock garden project can be viewed
online at www.peak.org/—parsont/emerald/.
