Interested individuals should meet at the F.M. Wilkins
Shelter at 2200 Summit Avenue at 11 a.m. Tours will last about an hour.
The tours will showcase the extensive work volunteers and a non-profit habitat
restoration crew have done this winter clearing a significant area of the forest of English ivy so
that the wildflowers and native plants in the forest understory might thrive.
"There is so much work being done under the guidance of the Hendricks Park Forest
Management Plan that we just want the community to be able to see some of the changes,"
said John Moriarty, coordinator of the plan.
Tours will include identification of native plants and flowers, information on the habitat
needs of different plants, their use around the home, and a free brochure on native plant
alternatives for landscaping.
The wildflower tours will take place every Sunday through May 5 at 11 a.m. Parking is
limited at the park; alternative transportation is strongly encouraged. To visit the park by bus,
take the #27 bus to Walnut and 17th, walk south to Fairmount, continue on Fairmount one block,
and then turn east on Summit and walk up to the top of the hill. For more information or special
accessibility accomodations, call Hendricks Park at 682-5324.
###
L
