Tree Trimmer 1 positions to the Tree Crew. Eugene will then have 7 tree care
employees with an average of 14,286 street trees per employee. This is almost
two and one -half times the survey average.
Currently our five person tree crew prunes approximately 3500 trees or about
700 trees per employee per year. We prioritized our work in the following
order: 1) Immediate removal of hazards brought to our attention 2)Requests
for tree work by the public and 3) Systematic-block to'``block'pruning
Priority one includes the clearing of traffic signs, removal of broken and or
hanging branches and removal of hazardous trees. Block to Block pruning
through out the City would be the ideal method or maintaining our 100,000
street trees. However, with a seven person crew able to prune about 700 trees
each per year, this would take approximately 20 years to do every street tree
in Eugene. This would not address the maintenance of Park Trees. Dependent
upon the species, age, location etc. our street trees should be maintenance
pruned every 3 -7 years.
While the elimination of hazardous conditions located in trees is our primary
concern, we do not have adequate resources or staff to both identify and
maintain all the hazards that may exist in Eugene. A partial solution to this
problem, and one that would provide us with an ongoing program of eliminating
hazards. Would be to create an inspectors position to identify those
situations that pose an eminent hazard and designate a crew to work on those
hazardous trees only. To use existing personnel for this purpose would reduce
our ability to work on tree requests form the public, park trees and perform
block to block pruning.
