This day is typical of the Urban Forester and the Urban Forestry <br /> Tech. <br /> spending an average of 3 hours answering 30 phone calls daily <br /> spending an average of 2 hours reading and answering about 40 E -mails daily <br /> Tech spends next three hours processing private and public tree removal permits, providing <br /> inspections, administering contracts for tree pruning and removal, examining trees for hazard and decay an <br /> example is Hendricks park where Mike has spent about 100 hours, sending notices of tree removal, and <br /> posting public trees to be removed, managing NeighborWoods program, managing contracts for PWE tree <br /> planting projects, managing contracts for public tree removal like 5th street Market tree removal, <br /> responding to tree cutting violations calls, purchasing trees and supplies and coordinating tree pruning work <br /> and complaints with EWEB. <br /> The Urban Forester spend the next 4 hours supervising the field crew and UF staff, administering <br /> the budget and program management, developing with an consultant the GPS street tree inventory manual <br /> and supervision of the street tree inventory work, reviewing tree preservation plans and street tree plans, <br /> working with developers on the new street tree requirements, inspections of public and private trees, <br /> inspections of development sites for tree preservation and street tree selection, review and approval of tree <br /> removal permits, citcom responses and media and council contacts and interviews, preparation of a UF <br /> policies and procedures manual, review of PWE tree planting and removal projects for tree selection and <br /> placement, provide training to the public and staff on proper tree care, and much of the same work <br /> identified in the Tech work description above and a bit more. <br /> Some suggestions for the management of the work load: <br /> reduce /eliminate items on the work plan according to a approved priority <br /> have a certified arborist provide the review of tree preservation on private property <br /> reassign office staff to UF to fielding phone calls leaving only the most important for the UF staff <br /> Fill the vacant position in UF with a Temp until final budget reductions are made <br /> Offer career training to staff at PWM in urban • -stry allowing 1 -2 more staff positions <br /> nof, age 1 <br /> • 3 30W Z <br />
