4. DEVELOPING THE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Eugene Celebration volunteers are recruited, scheduled and supervised by other volunteers.
The volunteer management team is the single most demanding committee of the entire event.
Past surveys have indicated that the volunteer manager can expect to spend 200 -400 hours to
fulfill the required duties. The staff works closely with the volunteer management team to insure
that the volunteer management team stays on task, completes the necessary duties, and
recruits and trains new committee members to replace outgoing committee members.
5. VOLUNTEER REWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Providing adequate reward and recognition is critical to making volunteers know they are valued
by the organization. Given the budget limitations, the Eugene Celebration staff and planners
have needed to be creative about ways to recognize volunteers. Volunteers receive a badge
that is honored like a pin for admission to the event during their non - volunteer time and one
voucher per volunteer shift that is good for a free souvenir item (such as a poster or a key
chain), a discount on a Celebration t -shirt, or entry into a prize drawing. The Celebration also
provides some amenities on the weekend of the event, such as a portable restroom that is
reserved for volunteers and free soft- drinks. The Celebration also published the name of each
event volunteer in the thank -you ad that appeared in the Register -Guard after the event.
•
2
II -28
