Marketing PWM (Carla Spangler /Eric Johnson)
1. Get rid of PW Day – PW Day is a department wide event so this is not just a
PWM & POS decision. PW Day Planning Committee provides planning for
future events. This idea will be passed onto the future planning committee.
This year's event is already scheduled and will move forward. 2009 event
has been cancelled. Eric Jones With Don Easton's help I have created a PW "think
tank" on sharepoint Here's the link to the PW Think Tank:
http: / /ceshare /pw /PWThinkTank /default.aspx
2. Advertise on side of buses – Katie Blair has conducted research on
advertisement with Lane Transit District and other jurisdictions about cost
of ad space. Katie concluded that advertisement on the side of vehicles costs
around $ 425 for 4 weeks (does not include graphic design or setup fees).
Contact Katie Blair for more information. Question: what message do you
suggest for the ad?
3. (3 questions regarding public education) - Continue education programs on
public access channel (City programs); More public education – less known
programs; Focus on programs not known by community – This public education
program started in 2004, Working City highlights city programs and is a
good way to market various city programs. Contact Eric Jones or your
( isy supervisor if you have future program ideas. ACTION ITEM: One
suggestion is to establishing an on -line library of previous programs for
employees to view.
4. (3 questions regarding advertising on city vehicles) - Market services on City
fleet; Put ads on large vehicles (i.e. vactor has ad w /pictures of what the program
does) Advertise what we do on the side of vehicles – Fleet Board approves all
signage on city owned vehicles; advertisement may take away or distract the
public from the safety boards or signage already on the vehicles.
5. Move PW Day to weekend (to target adults more) – PW day suggestions should
be forwarded to your supervisor, section or division manager. One reason
for having it on a week day is to attract 1000 or more school children and the
event is during normal operating hours with no shift change.
6. Establish a ride -a -long program for the public (i.e. sweepers, vactors, excavation)
– Not an active program at this point. We have the ability to do ride -a- longs.
In the past we have allowed citizens to ride during sweeping activities if the
proper waivers were signed.
7. Publish newsletter — highlights groups /individuals, advertise what we do –
Currently for internal use we have the Roosevelt Rumble & PW Monthly
Report that goes to the city council and the media. Here is a link to the PW
monthly report: PWMonthlyReport2008. 1 2.pdf ACTION ITEM: Goal of
our website is to highlight different crews each month; it is a work in
19
