The current letter used has proven very effective in gaining compliance with
the vegetation codes without further involvement of the City. This year to
date, we have sent 566 notice letters. Of this number only 140 required the
City to take the further step of abatement posting. This roughly equates to
75% of the people contacted responding to our initial notice. We wish the
number was higher but to gain a high percentage an even firmer notice letter
would likely be necessary.
Concerning the existing notice letter, you are not the only citizen who has
objected to the tone of the letter. However, the number of people telling us
that they find the letter objectionable is very small. While we have had
perhaps a half dozen people comment over the phone that the letter seems too
strong, you are the only citizen in the past year who has taken the time to
write a letter voicing this concern. We do appreciate this time taken on your
part. Without comments from citizens like yourself we have no way of knowing
how one of our programs may be affecting the individual property owner.
I hope this letter of explanation has been helpful in explaining why we feel a
firm but courteous notice letter is necessary for this program. The City of
Eugene does not wish to be in the vegetation management business upon devel-
oped properties like yours, and only does so when the concerns of other
citizens are expressed through the vegetation complaints they file. I would
welcome you to talk again with Johnny Medlin or Jack Long of my staff if you
would be interested in obtaining any further information upon our vegetation
management program.
Very truly yours,
Bob Hammitt
Maintenance Director
cc: Freeman Holmer
Johnny R.
