Other Concerns
• 3 fields is not enough for a "complex" - think bigger
• have land use /feasibility study done at Cal Young
• Parking will inevitably limit the development plan. The neighborhood already sees effect
of overflow parking.
• Keep the drainage ditch (not bury it or switch to culverts). It is a valued wetland in our
neighborhood.
• Simply relocating the school with the same footprint will not serve the community 5 or
10 years from now. A larger school area footprint will obviously limit any land to
dedicate to athletic fields. We advocate don't spend the $ at Cal Young unless the 4J
school building plan is confirmed.
• no lights
• putting in too many things (maybe simplify program)
• time limits
• parking is biggest concern
• split up facility - park, skatepark, small ball fields, soccer fields at Gilham - large fields at
Cal Young.
INDIVIDUAL COMMENT SHEETS
Participants were asked to fill out comment sheets reflecting their own individual perspective.
The comments are compiled below.
1. A youth sports park can benefit individuals, groups, and the community. What do you feel
are the benefits of a park for youth?
• too many to list
• a place to be active, have fun, do things that are positive
• provides a community meeting place
• it would give the youth a place to play and spend time where they don't have to spend
money, it's relatively safe and quite healthy
• I think you should put a skateboard park here because there isn't anywhere to skate. I
know that we're not allowed to skate at any 4J schools. I have a skatepark design for you
but I don't know how much money or how much space. I don't want another skate park
like Amazon. Call me at: [name and number given]. I would be willing to design the
park for you or help!
• I think we should get a skateboard park. If we got one I would want more than Amazon
has Like, have half pipes, quarter pipes, pyramids and stuff like that Not just a bowl. If
we got one, you should have telephones, drinking fountains or lights. [name and number
given]
Cal Young Youth Sports Park
Introductory Meeting Page 4
