Page Two
These occurrences are not frequent enough to be a serious problem and we can deal with
them because of that. We enjoy the activity level as it currently exists. We really do not
want our quality of life destroyed
Other points to consider:
1. The Seattle School District has only one stadium available for all of their high schools. Even
factoring in use by Springfield children who participate in Kidsports, this area doesn't need
four multi -use stadiums.
2. As Arnold Hultberg pointed out in his letter to you, this project is far too expensive for the
value received by the community.
3. How many national sports figures or accomplished college -level players has the Eugene -
Springfield area produced? Sports activities at the level these stadiums would support do not
need facilities as designed for this project.
4. It is my belief that the number of children who will actually benefit from these stadiums does
not justify their construction. Not all children are interested or talented in sports, either in a
school environment or as part of an outside, organized program.
I understand District 4J owns two parcels of land in the North Eugene and Sheldon High School regions.
I also understand that Springfield is developing an area just east of I -5, south of the river, and north of
Beltline specifically as a sports complex. Wouldn't it make more sense for the two cities to cooperate in
developing two large sports complexes that will accommodate the schools and Kidsports?
Wouldn't it make sense to use some of the money approved in the November '98 election to
improve /expand the community center facilities so that children who don't participate in sports can have
an opportunity to stay occupied in a positive way?
Some of the money could be used to lower the classroom student teacher ratio.
Some of the money could be used to expand programs in our schools that have been cut because of lack
of funds.
There are many activities besides sports that teach children to cooperate and to function as a team and I
think they should be made available.
I no longer have children at home, yet I support money levies for the schools. Children are the future and
we must provide them the necessary tools to take care of us when we are old! I also support my right to
be able to hear myself think in my living room or to hear conversation of my guests without competing
with 1000 to 2000 roaring sports fans and a sound system reporting every move on an athletic field.
It's sad that my tax dollars, which I freely give as a member of this community, can be used to devalue
my property, cause me to incur additional large expense to continue living in my home, or force me to sell
my property.
