EUGENE SCHOOL DISTRICT 4J
Multi- Purpose Athletic Field Concept Study — Predevelopment Meeting
January 8, 1999 Page 3
Emergency Vehicle Access
Access for medical emergency vehicles will be provided to each field.
❑ What are the requirements for access to each field site by
apparatus?
Fire Hydrants
❑ What are the requirements for locations of fire hydrants at each
field site?
Bleacher Seating
Bleachers seating will be of aluminum and steel non - combustible
construction. Proposed bleachers are to include up to 16 rows with 26
inch seat spacing, and 12 inch rise. Bench type seating without backs are
planned.
The 1997 OSSC code has changed the aisle width and cross aisle
requirements. Maximum number of seats to an aisle is 10.
Aisles are calculated under 1004.3.2.3.1 and Table 10D to be up to 9 feet
wide with bleacher seating on both sides (290 seats x 0.300 x 1 (A) x 1.25
(B)). See attached sketch.
❑ Is this the correct method to calculate aisle widths for outdoor
bleachers?
1004.3.2.3.1 states that where aisles converge to form a single path the
aisle width shall not be more than the combined required width of the
converging aisles. This would indicate a required cross aisle of up to 18
feet.
❑ Does section 1008.5.5 take precedence for the cross aisle width
in bleachers? This would allow a cross aisle of a minimum of 54
inches or the "greatest of the minimum required widths as
determined by 1004.3.2" which would still be 9 feet wide.
❑ Are there other code provisions or exceptions to allow for
narrower aisles and cross aisle?
Without any other relief, we are planning to include exit stairs directly
onto the field surface near each aisle to avoid the over -wide cross
aisle requirements. This will have a negative impact on security and
site lines, and will cause the bleachers to be moved further from the
playing field.
