Parks, Facilities, Staffing & Budgeting Benchmarking Report for ORPA
Computing results by means and medians — The mean represents the "average" of a group of
numbers. The median represents the mid -point of a group of numbers. With small lists of
numbers (100 or less) it is often useful to show both the mean and the median as just a few
numbers can dramatically influence the mean. Throughout this report, we have frequently used
the mean and median to provide further analysis of the data.
Best practices — Best practices is a term that indicates a particular organization "excels" in a
particular area and/or has the maximum number of facilities (i.e. baseball fields, softball fields,
playgrounds, etc.) in an area. For example, all 39 responding ORPA members manage parkland.
The best practices provider, i.e. the community that manages the most parkland per 1,000
residents has 113.71.acres per 1,000 residents. This is far in excess of the average or "mean" of
all 39 communities at 16.17 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. Throughout this report, we
provide examples of "best practices" providers in specific parks, trails, and facilities areas.
Looking at your agency in relationship to the mean, median and best practices (maximum)
numbers for a particular park, facility, budget category, etc. is one good way to evaluate your
position in the market place.
The following pages summarize major survey findings.
NOTE: The benchmarking data contained in this report is proprietary intellectual
property of ETC Institute/Leisure Vision.
