2008 OLYMPIC TRACK AND FIELD TRIALS
Involvement
We feel Eugene is the ideal place for the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials. We are
confident that we will create a warm and welcoming environment for the athletes, their
families and the spectators. Our goal is to get everyone involved, and our community is a
perfect size to do just that. With Lane County taking the lead and the City of Eugene
Library, Recreation and Cultural Services Department a strong partner, we will develop a
marketing campaign that ensures everyone is aware of the event. We have established
many valuable community partnerships, which will better enable us to bombard the
community with a comprehensive marketing initiative: our Downtown area, our City
buildings, our performing arts centers, our recreation facilities, our parks, and our schools
will all participate. Eugeneans are typically friendly and very involved in community
activities; they are the savvy, athletically and politically - involved citizenry found in
university towns. We will provide ambassadors as volunteers to assist the athletes and
make them feel comfortable. For evidence of this area's interest and commitment to
athletics, just hang around some weekend when a University of Oregon Ducks' game is
taking place; the whole world turns green and yellow.
Youth
We have a strong commitment to youth development with a heavy emphasis on health
issues, especially in light of the national focus on combating youth obesity. Our Recreation
programs and services are designed to develop our youth emotionally and physically.
Competitive amateur athletics is highly valued in our community. We have a lifelong
commitment to the development of track and field. We have good working relationships
with our local schools and will work together to promote and support the event.
World's Greatest City for the Arts & Outdoors
We are the home of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Cuthbert Amphitheater, and
The Shedd, venues which attract world -class performers, which will ensure excellent
indoor and outdoor entertainment. Eugene's summer weather is ideal: clear, sunny and
dry, but not too hot, with cool mornings and evenings. We have it all: clean rivers and
lakes, awesome mountains, and the breathtaking Oregon Coast only one hour away.
Hayward Field is designated exclusively for track and has served as the home of three
Olympic trials, eight NCAA championships, and other world -class track events, such as
the National Masters Track and Field meet, the World Veteran Games, the Pan American
Games trials, and the Prefontaine Classic, which has been ranked first among all annual
track & field meets in the U.S. by the IAAF since 1996. Athletes must be ranked in the
Top 50 in the world in their events to be eligible to compete. Hayward Field is the
Carnegie Hall of track and field, and the primary reason for Eugene's fitting nickname,
"TrackTown USA."
7 ,St nn co C
