NANCY NATHANSON
. , STATE REPRESENTATIVE
DISTRICT 13
..or
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
H B - 3224
Willamette River Enhancement for 2008 Olympic Trials
Summary:
The 2008 Olympic Trials will attract 15,000 spectators per day and 1,000 media
personnel. The event will generate 30,000 room nights for 10 consecutive days in
Eugene /Springfield, as well as many more nights for other portions of Lane, Linn, and
Benton Counties. The event is expected to have a direct spending impact of at least
$18 million.
The Willamette River is one of the key natural resource attractions and tourist
destinations in the vicinity of the Trials.
LC 3180 will help Eugene /Springfield, Lane County, and the State of Oregon present
the best venue possible for visitors from around the State, nation, and world.
Recognizing this unique economic opportunity, $300,000 should be allocated to legacy
projects that will enhance the Willamette River Corridor from downtown Springfield to
the 1 -5 bridge.
Examples of potential projects:
1. Improve lighting to increase safety along the Willamette River pedestrian bike and pedestrian
paths;
2. install permanent signage directing visitors and tourists to areas of interest or importance, and
interpretive signage for natural resources;
3. install permanent recycling and garbage bins along the river to collect trash;
4. clean up and enhance the Autzen footbridge;
5. remove invasive species along river and replace with native plants and shrubs;
6. develop kiosks and markers along the river noting key places, events, and memorials.
If you have any questions please call Tim or Adam in
Representative Nathanson's office at 6 -1413.
Office: 900 Court St NE H -288, Salem, OR 97301 - Phone: 503 - 986 -1413
District: P.O. Box 41895, Eugene, OR 97404
