Attgi
EUGENE MASONIC CEMETERY ASSOCIATION
PO Box 5934, EUGENE, OR 97405 #.•
July 31, 2010
Johnny Medlin
Director of Parks and Open Space Division
1820 Roosevelt
Eugene, OR 97402
Good Day!
John Bredesen from the Eugene Masonic Cemetery here.
I want to compliment you for your work on the op -ed piece in the
R/G two Mondays ago, and the points you make about the many
parks and recreational opportunities we have in this area and
Eugene specifically. Hendricks Park is very special, not only
because of the Rhody garden, but for the nature trails and natural
beauty. I was married in the shelter way back before it was rebuilt,
so it's very special to me.
While the Masonic Cemetery is not a part of the Parks and Open
Space Division, we of the Board of Directors and our two part -time
employees feel that we make a significant contribution to the
"parks" feeling for many Southeast Eugene neighbors. We have
over two miles of barked paths in our 10 acres, and on an annual
basis, host somewhere between 20 to 30 thousand persons on those
paths, based on informal head counts. Because of the many
requests we've received, we've established a program where two
Board or Staff members are present the last Sunday of every month
(except December) in order to have Hope Abbey Mausoleum open.
All of this is part of our community responsibility as a historic,
cultural and natural resource.
