September 23, 2014

CONTACT: Chuck Mueller, Project Manager, 541-501-0370

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Road Work Starts Wednesday on Madison Street
Work is about to start on the last remaining major street repair project this year in Eugene.
Crews from Knife River Corp., working under contract to the Eugene Public Works Department, on
Wednesday, Sept. 24, will begin reconstructing Madison Street from First to Eighth avenues.
For the past month, the project has focused on preliminary work such as building sidewalk
access ramps and replacing and relocating underground utilities. Now the work will shift to
removing the deteriorated surface and subgrade and rebuilding the street from the ground up.
Traffic will be restricted in work zones, including overnight in some locations. Watch for
flaggers and signs directing traffic. Motorists and cyclists are encouraged to use alternative routes
to avoid delays.
The current schedule calls for construction to be substantially completed by Oct. 17.
However, because the street will be resurfaced with asphalt, the work is somewhat weather
dependent.
The reconstruction of Madison Street is part of a larger contract that also includes repairing
First Avenue from Washington to Van Buren streets and Monroe Street from First Avenue to Blair
Boulevard. The work on First Avenue is finished except for installing pedestrian-activated flashing
lights at First and Monroe and completing traffic signal upgrades at First and Van Buren. On
Monroe Street, concrete panel replacement has been completed from Blair to Fifth Avenue, with
ongoing concrete work between Fourth Avenue and the railroad tracks.
Total cost of the overall project is approximately $2.2 million, funded primarily by the 2012
voter-approved bond measure to fix city streets.
Elsewhere around the city, the repaving of Broadway from Franklin Boulevard to Pearl
Street is scheduled early next week, weather permitting.
For more information about major projects in the Eugene area, go to
www.keepusmoving.info, or follow EugenePW on Twitter.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
