„ EUGENE:' Public Works
Maintenance
1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
Eugene, Oregon 97402
(503) 687 -5220
July 25, 1994
To Interested Parties of the Amazon Park Development Plan:
In a June 7, 1994 public forum, City staff presented a revised
development plan for Amazon Park that was responsive to public
comment received during and following the first public meetings
on March 28. In addition, the plan has been prepared in the
context of the Statewide Planning Goals, the Metro Plan, the
Eugene Parks and Recreation Plan, and the Natural Resources
Study.
The response to the plan presented on June 7 was very favorable.
Many, but not all, expressed needs for additional recreation
facilities were accommodated. In the process, several areas of
the park were identified for being changed to enhance or recreate
natural resources that existed before any park development
occurred. The preservation and enhancement of natural resources
in the park is an expressed need according to many of the people
who attended the meetings, and is supported by goals and policies
in all of the documents mentioned above. Public response was
that the June draft addressed those diverse and conflicting
objectives in a way that will ultimately and significantly
enhance both interests.
Accordingly, staff have prepared a proposed final (July) draft
development plan that is being posted at the Hilyard Center for a
two week period - -July 27 - August 10- -for final review. This
draft is responsive to some of the "fine- tuning” suggestions that
were made during and following the June 7 public comment period.
It leaves substantially intact the major features that were
supported. You are invited to mail or phone in any comments you
have on this final draft to the location listed on the letterhead
above. If no new ideas are presented that would lead to
significant changes in the plan -- balance between recreation and
natural resource values, locations for specific features,
inclusion of certain activities, etc. - -the plan will be adopted
administratively.
Accompanying this letter is a document that provides pertinent
background information needed for Amazon Park planning, and a
variety of considerations behind each planning decision made.
Thank you for your interest and input in updating the Amazon Park
Development Plan. Staff look forward to working with elected
officials, private citizen efforts and volunteers in implementing
the various changes proposed.
John Etter, John Weber,
Parks Planning Staff, Public Works Maintenance
