Common name: Shaggy horkelia
Family: Rosaceae
Status: ONHDB List 1 (threatened with extinction throughout its range)
Federal: Species of Concern
• State: Candidate
BLM: Bureau sensitive
Geographic Distribution: Restricted to the Willamette Valley and the Umpqua Valley.
Known historically from Benton, Douglas, Lane, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Washington Cos.,
but no extant populations are known from the last three counties. Most of the remaining
populations occur in Lane County in the Eugene area. There are 22 extant EOR's in the
ONHP data base, as well as 17 historical collections that probably represent populations that
are no longer extant. Five EOR's are located in West Eugene. None of the existing
populations are especially large. Horkelia congesta ssp. nemorosa Keck, the only other
taxon contained in this species, occurs in SW Oregon and NW California (Keck, 1938).
Habitat Description: Horkelia congesta is restricted to native prairies but grows on a
variety of soils and is found in both upland prairie and wet prairie communities. At some
sites it is associated with open stands of oaks and ponderosa pine. In a few cases, small
populations are found in areas that are subject to disturbance such as mowing (Sand Ridge
Cemetery, Irish Bend School), but these populations are probably marginal without special
management.
Growth Habit: Herbaceous taprooted perennial with a simple to branched caudex, stems
usually one to several, 2-4 (5) dm. tall, pilose- hirsute below, becoming glandular - puberulent
above.
Leaves: Basal leaves several, blades 3 -8 cm. long, pilose- hirsute to silky, pinnately
compound with (5) 7 -13 mostly narrowly oblanceolate or linear - cuneate, leaf segments up to
2 cm. long, apically 2- to 3- toothed; stipules divided into 2 -3 filiform segments; cauline
leaves several, transitional to the several -lobed bracts.
Flowers: Flowers complete, perigynous, petals cream, 5 -6 mm. long, obovate - flabellate,
slightly retuse, distinctly clawed; pistils mostly 10 -20, styles about equaling stamens;
hypanthium cup- shaped, pilose- hirsute and glandular - puberulent, yellowish, not quite so long
as the greenish - tinged, lanceolate- acute, spreading, 4 -5 mm. calyx lobes.
Fruit: Mature achenes about 2 mm. long; mean seed wt. = 1.043 mg.; seeds / lb. =
434,890 (Guerrant and Raven 1995).
Seed Germination Rate, Seed Bank Persistence: Guerrant and Raven (1995) studied
methods for germinating seeds of native taxa and feasibility of long term cold storage for 69
8
