05/05/97 MON 09 :52 FAX 5032316195 FWS -OSO a1003
•
listed and candidate plants, but also conserves their diminishing wet prairie habitat.
Conservation agreements are entirely voluntary and are undertaken with willing landowners and
agencies. •
While writing the agreement, the City of Eugene, with the assistance of the Native Plant
Society, took the initiative to survey Amazon Park for Bradshaw's lomatium. After changing
management, such as delaying mowing until after seeds have matured, the estimated population
of flowering plants increased from 750 in 1990 to more than 10,000 in 1994. More surveys,
experimental transplantation and propagation, habitat restoration, and native species management
are now planned for 1997 and 1998. City workers and Native Plant Society members have been
volunteering their evenings and weekends to ensure the success of conservation .measures for
lomatium and other native species. The enthusiasm and cooperation of all of the involved parties
are the key to the success of this conservation agreement.
Note to Editors: Photographs of the plant and its habitat are available upon request.
•
