Guidelines for Tree and Shrub Plantings Along Amazon Creek <br />staff of the POS Natural Resources section, where stream plantings have already been <br />incorporated into annual work plans. <br />Purpose <br />These planting guidelines are written for people involved in planting projects on Amazon Creek, <br />such as volunteer groups. They include descriptions of the creek's existing geology, <br />geomorphology and plant communities, including some of the human impacts to these <br />conditions. Further, this document provides detailed descriptions of tree and shrub species, <br />quantities, spacing and clustering information that is tailored to each segment of the creek. <br />Part of the purpose of the document is to help City staff plan appropriate planting projects to <br />shade the water within Amazon Creek, to help meet the City's requirement to lower the water <br />temperature of the Creek. The plan also helps the City more generally implement the three <br />primary goals of the Comprehensive Store Water Management Plan (CSMP), which address <br />flood control, water quality improvement and protection of natural resources. This document is <br />limited to providing guidelines for tree and shrub plantings. Particular spacing and species notes <br />should be updated on a continuous basis, as knowledge and experience dictate. The plan does <br />not preclude other options with scientific merit, nor does it in any way preclude larger restoration <br />projects from occurring that would improve habitat conditions even more than the current <br />channel configuration allows. <br />Organization of the document <br />This document is divided into three chapters: Upper, Middle, and Lower Amazon Creek. This <br />division makes it easier to understand the different stream habitat types. For the purposes of this <br />report, Amazon Creek will be evaluated from Martin Street at the upstream end to the Fern <br />Ridge Reservoir at the downstream end. The chapters follow a common framework, which <br />includes location, geology and geomorphology, human activities, and finally the plant <br />communities, including both existing conditions and the Guidelines for Tree and Shrub <br />Plantings. These individual components include the following: <br />A. Location: This section describes where exactly this part of the Amazon Creek is located. <br />B. Geology/ Landforms — Geomorphology/ Stream shape: Geology or landforms describes the <br />creek's surroundings. For example, does the creek flow through open land or close to <br />buildings? Geomorphology or stream shape describes how the creek looks in its channel. For <br />example, is their bedrock or is there only gravel? <br />C. Human Activities: This section has a description of past human activities and why they <br />occurred. Some of these activities are still necessary for safety, like flood protection. <br />D.
